For a long time DLM Ranch, LLC researched what kind of pigs we thought we would enjoy raising. Our priorities were searching for pigs with the best meat that were easy to raise and had friendly personalities – we did not want the typical feedlot type of pigs that are not very nice. DLM Ranch, LLC is a family-operated ranch where everyone is very hands-on, including children, so we needed pigs we could raise our children around while giving us the best quality of meat around. With these qualities in mind, we found the Idaho Pasture Pig (IPPs), and they give us exactly what we were looking for. IPPs are a combination of the original Duroc, old Berkshire, and Kunekune breeds. Now we raise and sell breeding stock and feeder piglets.
Idaho Pasture Pigs have plenty of names that apply to them: Grass Fed Pork, Pasture Pork, Natural Pork, and Grazing Pig. These pigs give us great quality meat that is darker and has a fresher flavor. Our IPPs are raised on pasture which is the main part of their diet, and we supplement a small amount of grain on the side. These pigs, with the right size pasture and correct minerals being met, will not root up your pastures (big bonus for us!). It takes 8 to 10 months to raise IPPs to butcher weight – 220 to 250 pounds. Adult breeding pigs average the weight of 350 lbs for sows and 450 lbs for boars. Every pig we have owned are extremely friendly and gentle with a hint of often comical attributes. Our sows farrow and raise their piglets all on their own on pasture – they are very attentive and amazing moms. All of our pigs have been taught the electric fence. Another benefit of these piglets being raised and born on pasture is that they are not vaccinated and don’t need extra mineral shots due to their outstanding immune systems.
